HEY, ECE Renegade!
Camp Renegade Play is waiting for YOU!
The funnest virtual summit you will ever attend is at it again for the 4th year! Join us for some renegade learning January 30th - February 2nd, 2025.
Get your free ticket!Camp Renegade Play is a 4-day virtual conference (the funnest one of the year) to help early childhood educators go from hesitant to confident when implementing the unconventional (ahem - renegade), yet developmentally appropriate, characteristics of play into their environment.
ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?
You know play is how children learn but don't have the tools or confidence to navigate the more renegade types of play (weapon play, risky play, mud play etc.)
You know long, teacher directed circle times are not developmentally appropriate but have no idea what to do instead.
Want to plan in more time for free, uninterrupted play but think the children will be wild and feral.
Have to use a boxed curriculum but want to figure out how to implement play while still meeting requirements.
Envision this.
You feel comfortable enough in your play based teaching practice to allow children to take risks and engage in the more controversial types of play (rough and tumble, weapon play) and have the confidence to back it up to naysayers.
You go back to work on Monday with a renewed sense of motivation and confidence to do what is most developmentally appropriate for the children in your care.
You connected with other caregivers/teachers that are on the path to a more play centered approach to education and have people in your corner so you don't feel so alone!
“Camp Renegade Play was an amazing experience jam-packed full of inspiring ideas. I completed the weekend feeling engaged, energized and ready for action. My cape is patched up and ready to serve as I boldly go forth to advocate for the importance of play in the lives of young children.”

HI! I'M KRISTEN, YOUR TROOP LEADER.
LET'S DO THIS THING!
I'm on a mission to help early childhood educators (or anyone that cares for young children) to get more confident and comfy when it comes to the renegade types of play (the types that adults often shut down) so that we can give children the developmentally appropriate and creative childhood they deserve!
I started out teaching in a traditional preschool classroom. Complete with rotational centers, calendar time, weather time, criss-cross-applesauce-eyes-on-me-one-two-three, and hardly any free play. Once I leaned into play and started to say YES more and NO less, I came to see the magic in child led learning and play!
Join me as I interview 19 experts, thought leaders and play advocates over the course of 4 days! You will become the renegade teacher I know you can be!

Rethinking Weapon Play
Weapon play often sparks concern, discomfort, and even outright bans in early childhood settings. But what if we reconsidered its value and purpose? In this session, we’ll explore the narratives and fears that shape our views on weapon play and how these responses can inadvertently stifle children’s creativity, empathy, and ability to process complex emotions. We'll discuss the developmental significance of weapon play, examining how it fosters critical skills such as conflict resolution, collaboration, and storytelling. Through this exploration, we’ll challenge the stigma surrounding weapon play and reframe it as an opportunity for growth, understanding, and imagination. Finally, we’ll identify strategies to support and scaffold weapon play in a way that prioritizes safety while honoring the child’s need to explore power, agency, and their evolving understanding of the world.

Teaching Active Children, or Stopping Active Children So You Can 'Teach?'
I often get requests to speak to groups about 'teaching active children,' when what the organizer really wants me to do is share 'tips and tricks' to get children to be still, silent and compliant so adults can perform their 'teaching.' It's time to kick this thinking to the curb, to embrace our ethical responsibility to do no harm, to understand how all learning is bodily in early childhood, and to make a change. Let's shift from teaching active children to understanding why children are so active and how we may need to adapt our practices or thinking so that active children can learn.
