Risky Play
Risky play refers to those activities that make us say, "Oh no, be careful!" You know, like climbing trees, exploring new places, or even trying out physical challenges. As it turns out, research tells us that these "risky" activities are actually incredibly beneficial for children. They help them grow physically, mentally, and emotionally—pretty amazing, right? Get ready to share this and more with caregivers, administrators, and your staff.

Math is Everywhere
Math is all around us. A child’s mind is mathematical and if we stand back, watch, and be a detective of their little brain, we will see that children are naturally curious and drawn to figuring out the world around them. They are built to be mathematicians. Use these provisions to teach others how they can embrace that math is everywhere!

Literacy in Play
Children are like natural-born literacy explorers, all through the magic of play! There are so many amazing ways kids dive into learning about letters, words, and all things language - without ever having an adult put a worksheet in front of them. Kids are hardwired to be curious about the world around them. They can't help it! It's like their inner scientist is always on the lookout for new stuff to figure out. As they see letters and words around them, they start piecing together the puzzle of how they work. Learn more about this in these provisions!

Process Art
At this age, children are at a critical stage of development, and art plays a significant role in fostering their creativity, imagination, and overall growth. Learn how to help others understand that process-based art experiences offer several advantages over craft projects. Children have opportunities to build confidence, solve problems, and collaborate with process art. These provisions are sure to give you a lot of tools to help others, especially at-home-caregivers understand all the benefits of process art.

Outdoor & Nature Play
Our best and favorite memories are usually spent outdoors as children. The joy of exploring the natural world, building forts, playing tag, and discovering the wonders of the great outdoors is a cherished memory that many of us share. A growing body of evidence suggests that today's children spend significantly less time playing outside compared to previous generations. This and so many more reasons are why it's critical to get children outside and to get others on board with it. These provisions will help you share with others why kids spend so much time outside at your program.

School Readiness Myth
We know the question "How will they be ready for Kindergarten if all they do is play all day?" gets asked all too often. These provisions give you all the tools you need to remind others about why everything you do IS getting them ready for Kindergarten. Just like all children learn to walk at different times, different skills and parts of the brain are developed at different times! A play-based approach allows educators to meet the needs of each individual child on their own individual timeline!

Sensory Play
Sensory play refers to those activities that involve mess, multiple senses, and free exploration of various media. Sensory play is a fundamental aspect of early childhood development, offering many benefits for children’s growth. Engaging in activities that stimulate the senses not only fosters creativity but also enhances cognitive, physical, and social-emotional skills. We know sometimes others don’t understand why children are covered in paint, splashing through puddles, or endlessly interested in making slime. These provisions will help you explain to others why you embrace all kinds of sensory play.

Circle Time
Circle time needs to be engaging, developmentally appropriate, and short! Circle time is best used to build community, sing, dance, have puppet shows, play games, and more. Children do not learn the ABCs and 123s through rote memorization of the calendar, they learn all of those things while playing in a rich environment that is thoughtfully set up with optimal learning and development in mind! Use these provisions to support you in explaining to others why you don’t do calendar time and how you ensure children are not participating in a watered down version of a 1st grade circle time.

Loose Parts
You know kids love sticks and boxes. Do you know why? Loose parts are open-ended materials that can be moved, combined, taken apart, and put back together in countless ways. Unlike traditional toys that often come with a specific purpose or set of rules, loose parts encourage creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration among children! These provisions will give you some new ideas and ways to ensure you can teach others about why kids should play with boxes, plastic containers from the cupboards, and alllllll the sticks.

Emergent Curriculum vs Themes
Does anyone ask you “Will you be learning about pumpkins?” in October? Or wonder why you haven’t explored ice and snow, even though you live somewhere that doesn’t get cold? By stepping away from a rigid thematic schedule, you can embrace a fluidity that allows children's natural interests to guide your activities. This might mean a week filled with impromptu architectural projects stemming from a child's fascination with building blocks, or a deep dive into the local ecosystem inspired by a simple question about a bug found outside. These provisions will help you share with others why you use an emergent curriculum rather than predetermined themes.

Saying YES!
These provisions highlight the importance of saying yes. There are a lot of benefits to saying yes and they aren't just for the children! Sometimes adults say no before we even think about the request. Often the children are doing something, or asking for something, that their brain is telling them they need. We need to trust in children and find ways to shift nos to yeses to better better support children's learning and development. Saying yes more doesn't mean it's a free for all, so let's give those adults a little more information about what saying yes actually means with these provisions.

Social Emotional
Social and emotional learning is not smiley faces and frowny faces on popsicle sticks that are brought out a few times a year to ‘teach’ children about social and emotional skills. Social and emotional learning happens through play in early childhood! Through play, children learn to navigate social dynamics, express their emotions, and practice empathy. Use these provisions to let children express their feelings, share when they want, and solve their own problems.
