Meet Your Host and Camp Counselors
Hi! I am your Troop Leader, Kristen RB Peterson!
After listening to my 'fareygawdmather', Lisa Murphy, speak about the importance of play in early childhood, I was hooked. I fully embraced play based learning and never went back to traditional teaching methods. It has been a long and windy road full of shoulds and should nots, but I have broken up with the version of "teacher" we all grew up with and have leaned in to play facilitator. I created this summit specifically for more unconventional aspects of play. The things that make some people uncomfortable implementing in their classrooms. I want you to go in with an open mind and learn, discover, wonder and reflect to give children a place that is truly magical.

Connection as a Pre-Cursor to Academic Success
Leah McDermott is a former Master teacher turned unschooling advocate and mother of three. After over a decade spent in the world of education, two Masters of Education degrees, and multiple teaching certifications, Leah slowly began to realize that the way we were teaching our children in public schools went against everything that we knew to be true about learning acquisition and child development. When she gave birth to her first son, she knew it was time to make a change, and she left the classroom to be home with her child. Her passion for helping other children and families didn’t disappear, however, so as her son got older and closer to “school age,” she was determined to lean into trusting him as a learner and supporting other families in doing the same with their children. Through developing a child-led learning curriculum, creating a supportive space online for parents, and most recently, opening Bridge Academy - a private umbrella school for homeschoolers, Leah continues her life’s work of encouraging adults to unlearn what they’ve always believed to be true as they lean fully into trusting their children as natural, capable learners. Leah currently lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Brian, their three boys, and a collection of pets. Outside of work, she and her family are passionate about traveling the world and learning about new things together.
